The String Ensemble Conductor

Amy Lou Werst is serving her first year as conductor of GHYO.  She is also the Assistant Orchestra Director at Johnston Middle School.

Ms. Werst received her BA from Southwestern University under the tutelage of Professor Laurie Scott after studying with Bill Dick for over twelve years.  During her time at Southwestern, she served as Concert Master for four years and won Southwestern’s Concerto Competition twice.

After completing her degree, Ms. Werst worked as an Orchestra Director for the Austin Independent School District for one year.  During this time, she directed orchestras for four different schools simultaneously.  She also taught violin for two years at the Community Music School through the North Carolina School for the Arts in Winston-Salem.

Ms. Werst has played with North Carolina symphonies such as the Western Piedmont Symphony and Salisbury Symphony, as well as Brazos Valley Symphony, Temple Symphony and the Round Top Festival Orchestra in Texas.

Between pursuing her education and being an educator, Ms. Werst taught English in Korea and traveled in Europe and Asia.
